PHOBIAS :-

Phobias are not regular fears or short bouts of anxiety one feels in a stressful situation. They are a type of anxiety disorder that cause acute distress. There are 5 broad categories of phobias - Natural Environment, Animals, Medical, Situations, and Other. While the first four are fairly common, like a fear of thunderstorms, spiders, blood and crowds, the last category is the fear of something as mundane as dirt or even technology! There is even a phobia of phobias! Phobias can be the result of a negative experience or even genetics and learned behavior, and it can even affect one's ability to function. Here are a few common and some not-so-common phobias.

01

CLAUSTROPHOBIA:-  Claustrophobia happens to be one of the most common fears. One might feel extremely uncomfortable in small, confined rooms and crowded public places. Being in a confined space and the fear of being trapped in cramped spaces could very well lead to anxiety and panic attacks. Actress Uma Thurman revealed that she discovered she suffered from Claustrophobia when filming a scene for Kill Bill.

02

COULROPHOBIA:-  The 10th most common phobia, Coulrophobia is the fear of clowns. This does raise an important question: how does someone who tries to make people happy trigger such fright? Actor Johnny Depp confessed that his fear of clowns has a deeply rooted trigger. According to him, behind all that makeup and big smile hides a darkness that many cannot see.

NYCTOPHOBIA:-  Many people are afraid of the dark. But those who suffer from Nyctophobia have a deep-seated fear of darkness. The phobia develops over time and people attribute the phobia not just to darkness but also to the unknown dangers that come with it. Katy Perry revealed in an interview that she would sleep with the lights on, owing to severe Nyctophobia.

OPHIDIOPHOBIA:- Everyone knows that snakes are not a common household pet, and a large number of the population is afraid of these spine-chilling crawlers rightfully so. But being afraid of one and having a phobia of these legless amphibians are completely different things. Actor Matt Damon realized he had Ophidiophobia on the sets of his film, We Bought a Zoo.

ORNITHOPHOBIA:-  It is not uncommon to fear large birds of prey and meat-eating vultures. After all, they can pluck someone’s eyes out with those talons. Ornithophobia, on the other hand, is a phobia that causes one to fear even the most adorable household pet birds, like parakeets, finches, and even canaries. Actress Scarlet Johansson fears birds, especially when they flap their wings or get too pecky.

PHOBOPHOBIA:- Fearing a thing or two in itself is a problem. However, having a phobia where one might end up fearing something new is an unusual and unfortunate situation caused by phobophobia. In this, one lives in fear that they might develop a phobia, which, in turn, affects the most basic and routine things and they end up living super cautiously.

COIMETROPHOBIA:-  Sarah Michelle Gellar, who used to play Buffy, often fought and killed vampires and other ghoulish creatures fearlessly in “reel” life. In real life, however, the actress is absolutely terrified of cemeteries and graveyards. This unusual fear is known as coimetrophobia. She is, undoubtedly, a talented actress, as she managed to keep her calm while slaying terrifying demons with ease!

SWINOPHOBIA:-  Unless it’s a teacup pig, many find the creature to be quite repulsive. Some fear pigs to such an extent that the very mention of them can trigger a phobic reaction, also commonly known as swinophobia. Actor Orlando Bloom discovered his fear for the snorky sniffers when a pig went berserk on the sets of Kingdom of Heaven, forcing him to stay in his vanity van till they caught it.

TECHNOPHOBIA:-  Our lives pretty much revolve around technology. Today, almost everything is controlled by one smart gadget or another. No doubt, it can be intimidating, but developing a fear for it to such an extent can be alarming. Although the younger generation may not relate to this, some baby boomers and generation X, living in today’s world of tech, experience this phobia.

EISOPTROPHOBIA:-  It may come as an absolute shock but Baywatch actress Pamela Anderson has the fear of looking at her reflection in the mirror. This unusual fear is referred to as eisoptrophobia and should not be mistaken with the fear of looking at mirrors. When one sees themselves in the mirror, their reflection may be frightening. Experts claim that this could be because people don’t like what they see.

BOTANOPHOBIA:-  For many people, gardening is a hobby and then there are some whose life’s purpose is to take care and nurture plants. Sadly, some have a deep-rooted fear of plants to such an extent that even common household plants can affect their psyche. Actress Christina Ricci once admitted to this fear of hers and claimed that she is repulsed by just the thought of having plants indoors.

LEPIDOPTEROPHOBIA:-  The fear of insects and reptiles is not uncommon. In fact, the fear of roaches is one of the most common ones among other creepy crawlers. But, being afraid of butterflies, such delicate and amiable creatures, is quite unusual. Veteran actress Nicole Kidman does have this fear as she considers their behavior quite spooky. Some also claim that butterflies look unusual, causing anxiety.

CHRONOPHOBIA:-  The universal eternal fact that time will never wait for anyone and is here to remain unaltered is a little scary. However, the fear of losing time is a reality, and people do suffer from extreme anxiety due to chronophobia. It is the fear of losing whatever limited time one has, and they are not comfortable accepting the hand that has been dealt by fate.

KINEMORTOPHOBIA:-  The word came into existence after combining two words: Kine and Morto. Kine (Greek) and Morto (Latin) form Kinemorto, meaning the walking dead, the infamous creatures also known as zombies. Many people may have heard of zombie phobia, which is the lesser technical term. People suffering from this fear find even the mere concept of zombies or their existence terrifying. And it’s not just the zombies, vampires scare them equally.

EQUINOPHOBIA:-  Horses are majestic creatures that for thousands of years have been bred and trained for human interaction. However, those who suffer from equinophobia may become anxious and experience palpitations with stress even around the most gentle of trained studs. The fear is often linked to a childhood experience that may have been traumatic. Celebrity actress Kristen Stewart discovered her fear at the age of nine when she fell while riding and broke her elbow.

TRISKAIDEKAPHOBIA:-  Many people are superstitious about the number 13 and not just Friday the 13th. Triskaidekaphobia is the absolute fear of this digit and has racked up a terrible reputation with time. Late President Franklin D. Roosevelt was so superstitious about the number that he would never travel on dates that coincide with the number 13 and would never allow 13 people to sit at a table.

PEDIOPHOBIA:-  Porcelain dolls or China dolls may look pretty and cute but some have an absolute fear of these figurines. Especially ones with those big beady eyes can seriously scare someone. The fear at the sight of some of these dolls and figurines may be a root cause related to a previous traumatic experience. Magic Mike actor Channing Tatum suffers from pediophobia.

DENTOPHOBIA:-  Be it a regular dental checkup or an appointment for some cavity cleaning or filling, a visit to the dentist can be nerve-racking. However, there are some people who have a persistent fear of getting any dental work done to their pearly whites. It is one of the reasons why many take such good care of their teeth. Veteran actor Robert De Niro has this fear.

HERPETOPHOBIA:-  Fearing reptiles is not uncommon. Many of these creatures can make a person shudder with fright even at the thought of them crawling into homes. However, herpetophobia is a more specific fear of some reptiles, including larger lizards like the Komodo dragon or iguanas. Popstar Britney Spears once admitted she doesn’t fear snakes (also a reptile) but is terrified of large lizards.

AQUAPHOBIA:-  Those who don’t know how to swim may fear getting into deep water, and it is only logical. But those who have aquaphobia shudder at the thought of even getting into shallow water. Many celebrities including Will Smith, Carmen Electra, Snoop Dog, and Eva Mendes have revealed they have aquaphobia. Eva Mendes once revealed that she has never used the swimming pool at her house.

ARITHMOPHOBIA:-  People always associate the numbers 13 and 8 with bad luck. The fact that movies have been made featuring the unlucky number simply goes to show people do fear any association to the digits. However, those who have a collective and rather unusual fear of all numbers suffer from arithmophobia. It is commonly linked to triskaidekaphobia (number 13) and octophobia (number 8)

AGORAPHOBIA:-  The fear of being in public can get very stressful for someone who suffers from agoraphobia. It is not just limited to spaces but situations that may result in a feeling of helplessness. The mere act of meeting someone new and embarrassing themselves can lead to anxiety and panic attacks. Actress Kim Basinger opened up about her fear of public and overcrowded spaces in 2001.

HEMOPHOBIA:-  It is a difficult sight to watch someone bleed. The very thought of it can be scary, especially for people who suffer from hemophobia. The sight of just a drop of blood from a small needle prick can raise their blood pressure and increase their heart rates. It is an unusual but common fear that affects men and women of all ages.

GLOSSOPHOBIA:-  Even some of the greatest orators to walk the planet had to have the courage to address large crowds. Those who absolutely cannot, suffer from glossophobia. It is the one thing common between actor Harrison Ford and a select group of people who have this nerve-racking fear. Julia Roberts, as a child, used to stutter and get nervous in front of a large crowd.

ACROPHOBIA:-  Peering down from the top floor of the Burj Khalifa or the Empire State Building can churn up the contents of your stomach and is not that uncommon. However, for people who suffer from acrophobia, an acute fear of heights, can have panic attacks. Hangover star Zac Galifianakis could not make it to a press event for the third film of the series on account of the phobia.

Inspiring: Why Ajay Bhatt Invented USB But Never Made Any Money Out Of It

You’re working and suddenly you realize you have somewhere to go to. You save your work, but you want to resume later. You save it in a USB and just take it with you wherever you’re going.  None of this seems odd, does it? That’s because we are so used to the wonderful technology around us. But, your work wasn’t always this portable.

Let’s look at the journey of the man behind this innovation.

Ajay Bhatt, a graduate from Maharaj Sayajirao University in Baroda, is now a well-known name in the Silicon Valley. In 2010, he made it to GQ India’s list of ‘The 50 Most Influential Global Indians.’ Bhatt, who is Intel’s Chief Architect and Fellow for the Client Computing Group, already has 31 patents under his name. However, the USB isn’t one of them. He never made any money out of it.

Despite being the co-inventor of USB, he became a recognizable face among the masses only after a TV ad, in 2009, where he was portrayed as a rock star. After that, he says people would really treat him like a celebrity. Ajay intended the idea to bring about a change, and not make tonne of money. Intel, who owns the patent, also decided to make it open and royalty-free, right from the start. That is why today, it is affordable for us.

Just like a lot of great innovations, the idea for this device came from a problem he faced every day. He found the process of connecting cables, rebooting the system and handling the device software exhausting. Every time a document needed to be printed, this long process took up a lot of time.

With a goal to solve this problem, Bhatt started working with his team on it in 1992. By 1996, their first set of products was ready. However, the process was far from over.

Despite the device helping create a single connection across computers, the idea was hard to sell. Even the management at Intel did not initially like his idea. He re-worked his idea a few times before the company approved it.

After that, along with his team, he lobbied to various computer firms to review and enhance the work experience. He says that the company tried to work with each computer firm to understand how it could be adapted to make their functioning better.

This helped evolve the idea as each company tried to contribute to the idea by looking at their vantage point.

Apple first shipped a USB compatible product for the users of the iMac G3 in 1998 and soon after Microsoft too added it for the second edition of Windows 98. Once the big names started endorsing the idea, it was only a matter of time before the product found its way into almost each and every home across the world.

He says the product’s success is only because of the constant innovation and the encouragement of those who believed in the technology. He says that seeing its utility today, he feels happy that everybody could benefit out of it.

He feels the contentment that he gets out of seeing his idea and vision helping out millions across the world today is great. He is glad that money making was never a part of it.

To others who wish to follow his path, he advises them to be fearless and to persist in their journey. He believes that it is possible to turn the impossible into reality, if only you use your imagination to its fullest.

If you have that, the only thing that you need for success, is the right timing, he says. To anyone who is struggling with their idea, he says that one should always think that the best is yet to come.

Generosity is rare quality that most lack. While pretenses of generosity are many, the true trait is almost absent in many. In a world where money and power go hand in hand and charity is a mere word to get some publicity, there are people who do good and yet don’t talk about it. One such person is Khimjibhai Prajapati.

Sixty-eight-year-old Khimjibhai Prajapti has been a begging all his life for alms at the door steps of various temples in Mehsana, Gujarat. However, this man stands a league apart from others and is known for his charity all across the state. He collects alms and then uses them to help the needy. Prajapti is well-known for his efforts to promote education among girls. From giving away pens and notebooks at schools to distributing gold earrings to buy uniforms for girl students, he has been instrumental in helping many girls find their wings through education. It was no surprise when The Rotary Club of India chose him as one of the four people for the Literacy Hero Award this year. The award carried a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh and a citation for philanthropic activities in the society. Among the four winners, Prajapati is the only person who himself lives on charity. Apart from the little that he spends on his meager meals and his wife’s treatment, he makes it a point to give back to the society in his own little way. For someone who lives on alms himself, this indeed is a huge act of generosity. Prajapati says, “I am more content when I give something to the needy. I never counts my good deeds.” He is extremely excited about the honour and the award he has received. He squeals in a childlike enthusiasm when he says he has never stepped out of Mehsana. He is both happy and nervous about all the attention he is getting. The generous man believes that God will help him in his future endeavors, too. “I sincerely hope and wish that every child should be educated, the youth be empowered, and everyone be contented,” he says. Khimjibhai Prajapati was presented with the Rotary Literacy Hero award on 3 March 2017 in Chennai. Rotary Club of Mehsana took care of all his expenses including his journey and stay at Chennai.

This award is a recognition for Khimjibhai’s selfless philanthropy. It takes great effort and a big heart to give someone else, especially when you are needy yourself.

In the aftermath of COVID, private life insurers like SBI Life and HDFC Life have shown commendable speed in returning to pre-COVID levels. According to data released by companies, not only the premium collections, but even the new business premiums and the premium equivalents of life insurers is now back to pre-COVID levels. The benefits accrued most to the insurers with a strong bancassurance channel as the sales were the quickest to pick up in such cases. However, CARE Ratings expects the growth in the industry to taper this year from double-digit growth to single digit growth. One argument is that the pandemic has highlighted the risks of not being insured and that has resulted in a surge in demand for life covers as well as health covers. ICICI Pru Life was the underperformer in the life pack.

According to the World Gold Council, the Indian gold loan market is expanding rapidly to touch a level of Rs.460,000 crore by FY22. The size of the organized gold loan market is $47 billion and is expected to grow at around 16% annually in the next few years. In the aftermath of COVID, there was a huge demand for gold loans as normal loans linked to credit standing were not easily available. Hence the action shifted to gold loans as CIBIL score does not matter too much in such cases. This has boosted the profits of gold loan companies in India as well as the banks that are into extending gold loans.

Good Morning India!

Indian economy: mobile phones to contribute $400 bn to GDP by 2020
Indian economy is set for windfall gains as mobile phone users increasingly drive business forward. Mobile economy in India, world's second largest market by subscribers, will contribute around USD 400 billion to the country's GDP and create 4.1 million jobs by 2020, a report by the global mobile operators industry body GSMA said today.
Mobile economy will also lead to investments of USD 9 billion in telecom infrastructure, said the 'Mobile Economy India 2013' report prepared in collaboration with consulting firm Boston Consulting Group.
"The Indian mobile industry is fast-paced and innovative, but it currently lacks the regulatory environment to support its ambitions," GSMA Director General Anne Bouverot said.
The mobile ecosystem generated about 5.3 per cent of GDP for India in 2012, directly supported 730,000 jobs and an additional two million jobs when points of sale and distributors are included, she added.
According to Bouverot, the report predicts that by 2020, mobiles will contribute almost USD 400 billion to India's GDP, create 4.1 million additional jobs and invest USD 9 billion in infrastructure, with USD 34 billion contributed to public funding.
She said, however, that an absence of predictable, long- term policies in areas like allocation of radio frequencies is acting as a brake on investment, and the government's target of increased rural coverage would be supported by a more flexible spectrum policy.
This would be feasible particularly with the release of more frequencies in the bands below 1 GHz and the development of allocation processes that do not focus solely on maximising short-term spectrum fees, Bouverot added.
"India is on the cusp of dramatic transformation, both economically and socially, through mobiles," GSMA India Director Sandeep Karanwal said.
The mobile industry is ready to work closely with the government, as well as other adjacent industry sectors, to accelerate growth through mobile, increasing technological innovation in India and enhancing the lives of the citizens, he added.
